web standards
zijn digital supports the Web Standards Project (WaSP), a grassroots coalition that advocates for the industry support and use of core web technologies, such as XHTML, CSS, and others. These technologies are used to create and interpret web content and were established by the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) to foster the accessibility of information published on the internet.
Developing a site with web standards ensures that the site's content is available to the widest number of people – whether they're using a desktop computer, a PDA, or a cell phone, and regardless of their browser version or platform. A web standards-compliant site degrades gracefully in older browser versions and is forward-compatible, meaning that the code shouldn't suddenly 'break' when a new browser version is released.
Web standards also save the client time and money. Site designs can be modified by simply editing one or two style sheets. And web site maintenance is easier and less costly when the design no longer relies on a tangled mess of table tags.
And, as the WaSP web site explains, web standards mean that the most popular search engines can index your site more efficiently:
Complying with web standards can give your web pages greater visibility in web searches. The structural information present in compliant documents makes it easy for search engines to access and evaluate the information in those documents, and they get indexed more accurately.
