A Woman with Demons

A Life of Kamiya Mieko (1914–1979)

Yuzo Ota

Selection of the 2007 AAUP Book, Jacket & Journal Show
McGill-Queen's University Press

Although the author took his title from Kamiya Mieko’s own writings, he felt strongly that the design should not too literally embody the “demons.” Instead, the first English-language biography of this Japanese writer, famous in her own nation but relatively unknown in the West, has a delicate simplicity, inspired by Japanese package design and the beautiful embroidery on kimonos. The text is set in 11.5/18 Bembo Pro to a width of 27 picas. An ITC Japanese Garden Ornament is repeated to form a border at the right of the title and chapter opening pages, which have a narrower text block. The square-ish trim of 6 x 7½ inches gives an intimate feeling to the book's 288 pages.
