Image & Imagination
Edited by Martha Langford
Selection of the 2006 AAUP Book, Jacket & Journal Show
McGill-Queen's University Press and Le Mois de la Photo à Montréal 2005
The catalogue of La Mois de la Photo à Montréal 2005 was a logistical and design challenge: over a dozen contributors, sixty artists, nine chapters, twenty-nine exhibitions, and 131 photographs collected from around the globe. Further complicating matters was the fact that the book would be published simultaneously in English and French and printed with a change to the black plate only.
Fortunately, the title was bilingual so the title page spread could echo the bright red and the Trade Gothic type from the cover design. The red is repeated for the chapter numbers which are set in Minion Pro, as are the chapter titles, subtitles, and author's names. The exhibition opening pages are distinguished by the use of Frutiger for display, which is also used for the captions of exhibition images. Each exhibition is a self-contained unit and was designed to give maximum play to the images.
The 7¼x 11-inch trim was chosen by the artistic director of the exhibition. The text throughout is set in 10.2/13 x 31p6 Minion Pro; the French has a deeper text block and less generous use of white space around images. Both editions are 336 pages in length.
The 2006 AAUP Book, Jacket & Journal Show selected Image & Imagination in the category of Scholarly Illustrated. Published by McGill-Queen's University Press, I&I is the catalogue of La Mois de la Photo à Montréal 2005.
