Persuasion and Propaganda

Monuments and the Eighteenth-Century British Empire

Joan Coutu

McGill-Queen's University Press

This study looks at evolving notions of nation and empire through the monuments constructed in the British colonies. The title page spread, half titles, and part titles use details of the figure of Britannia from two carvings on the base of a monument pictured in the book. The softened edges of the ITC Founders Caslon display give the type a worn look that hints at both letterpress and weather-beaten carved letters. Irregularly shaped images were grouped into attractive spreads. Using a trim of 6¾ x 9¾ permitted a wider text block of 29p6 and a pleasant setting of 11/15 Minion Pro while keeping the length to 304 pages. Drop caps are in keeping with the period and add interest to the chapter opening pages.
