Frontiers and Sanctuaries

A Woman’s Life in Holland and Canada

Marianne Brandis

McGill-Queen's University Press

This 440-page biography follows the author's mother, Madzy, from her birth in Holland in 1914 through the difficult years of the German occupation in World War II to a new life in Canada. The text is set in 10.8/13.4 Adobe Caslon Pro to a width of 27 picas. The extensive quotations from Madzy's writing are set in the same size as the text to a narrower width of 24p9. The 6⅛ x 9¼-inch trim enabled a generous treatment of family photographs and paintings and drawings by Madzy which are set one to a page.
