about zijn
zijn is Dutch for the verb to be. That funny ij combination sounds just like the long i in English words like line and binary. But it's okay with us if you pronounce it any way you like.
garet markvoort
garet's creativity, meticulous attention to detail, and innate organizational abilities are apparent whether she is crafting a book design, setting type, devising an information architecture, or designing an interface and navigation system.
Before establishing zijn digital with brian ally, garet was a senior producer at I.C. Axon, a Montreal multimedia company specialising in web- and CD-ROM-based marketing and training for clients in the pharmaceutical industry. At I.C. Axon, she developed her project management skills and her interest in useable information architecture, interface, and navigation design while managing a staff of fifteen and overseeing the simultaneous production of 20–30 projects.
garet's print credentials date to her years at the Queen's Journal where she was introduced to page layout during long sessions with Ventura in the wee hours of the night. A reporter and section editor, she was elected editor-in-chief of the Journal for her final year at Queen's, spending the summer on the city desk of the Kingston Whig-Standard. garet worked as a freelance researcher, writer, and editor before being lured back to the production side as production assistant at McGill-Queen's University Press. MQUP rekindled her interest in typography and gave her an opportunity to put her ideas about book design into practice.
garet has a BA (Honours) in English Literature from Queen's University and a graduate diploma in Journalism from Concordia.
